The best times of year to buy electronics, appliances and clothes

A sale calendar can help you plan purchases, but timing is only one part of finding a worthwhile price. Here is where to start.

A good time to shop is not always the same as a good time to buy. Sales can provide a reason to check prices, but the right purchase also depends on what your household needs and whether you can wait.

Use the following calendar as a starting point rather than a promise of a lower price. Pick out what you need, keep track of its price and decide what you are prepared to spend before a sale begins.

How to plan purchases around sales

Start with a household list. Separate items you need soon from those you can replace later. A broken refrigerator may need a different approach from a working TV you would simply like to upgrade.

For each purchase, note the features and size that matter. For example, measure the space for an appliance, list the tasks a laptop needs to handle, or check which clothing sizes family members need. These details make it easier to avoid buying something just because it is on sale.

Add relevant sale periods to a calendar and check prices ahead of time. If you need an item before the next event, compare current options rather than assuming you must wait.

When to shop for electronics

Late November is a useful time to check electronics prices, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales covering products such as TVs, laptops and phones. For computers, the back-to-school period from July through early September is another time to look.

If a TV is on your list, check prices around the Super Bowl, from late January to mid-February. January post-holiday clearance can also be worth checking for older electronics.

Before shopping, identify the model or features you need and compare the same specifications across stores. An older device may suit your household, but check whether its storage, connections and software support meet your needs. Keep a note of the price you see before a sale so you have a useful point of comparison.

When to shop for appliances

November, particularly around Black Friday, is a time to check major appliance prices. Memorial Day in May is another period to watch, especially if you are looking for a refrigerator. July 4th and Labor Day sales are also opportunities to compare appliances.

If your current appliance still works, use the time before a sale to measure the space and doorways. Check the capacity and features your household needs, and note any installation requirements. If it has stopped working, compare what is available now with what you can reasonably wait for.

Look beyond the displayed price. Ask about delivery, installation, removal of the old appliance and any parts needed to connect the new one. Review the return and warranty terms before ordering, too.

When to shop for clothes

For seasonal clothes, try checking winter coats and boots in January and February, and summer clothes in July and August. The back-to-school period is a useful reminder to look for basics such as jeans and T-shirts. Treat those dates as prompts to compare prices, not guarantees that every item will be cheaper.

Take stock before shopping. Check what still fits, what can be passed between family members and what needs replacing. For children, consider whether an item is likely to fit when it is needed, and check the return policy before buying ahead.

A short list can help you focus on gaps in a wardrobe rather than adding duplicates. If a particular size or style is essential, decide how long you are comfortable waiting and compare the choices available.

How to check whether a deal is worthwhile

A sale label alone does not tell you whether an item is right for you. Before checking out, work through these questions:

  • Do I need it, and does it have the features or fit I want?
  • How does its current price compare with prices I noted earlier and with the same item at other stores?
  • What is the total after delivery, installation, returns or other applicable charges?
  • Does a coupon apply to this item, and are there conditions to meet?
  • What are the return, exchange and warranty terms?

If the item meets your needs and the total fits the amount you planned to spend, you can make a considered choice. If not, keeping it on your list for another sale is an option.
